Peeps Happiness, Sickness & Strikes: How to Keep Workers Productive
Complete guide to Peeps in Beyond These Stars: 16-tile housing radius, food & drink happiness restoration table, curing sickness, and stopping 3-shift strikes.
How Do Peep Needs Work in Beyond These Stars?
Peeps are the lifeblood of your settlement on Kewa’s back. Every farm harvest, smelter pour, research point, and terraforming trench depends on Peep labor. Unlike games where citizens are abstract worker numbers, every Peep in Beyond These Stars tracks three personal vitals between shifts:
- Happiness: Governed by diet quality, housing tier, adjacent Potato Patches / Decorations / Memorial Statues, and clean air.
- Energy (Exhaustion Recovery): Depleted by work shifts and long commutes; restored by eating food, drinking Water / Juice / Smoothies, and resting in housing.
- Health: Degraded when Peeps work on Polluted Hexes or suffer chronic Low Energy; restored at a Doctor’s Office.

The 16-Hex Housing Radius Rule Explained
The single most misunderstood mechanic in Beyond These Stars is the difference between Construction Hauling Distance and Workplace Commute Distance:
- Construction Hauling (Unlimited Range): Unassigned or construction-duty Peeps will happily walk 40+ hexes across Kewa’s back to carry Wood and Stone to a blueprint site.
- Workplace Staffing (16-Hex Hard Cap): Once that building is finished, zero Peeps will ever work inside it unless an Accommodation Building (Hut, House, Apartment, or Homestead) sits within 16 hex tiles!
Complete Food & Drink Restoration Table (Verified v1.0 Values)
Whenever a Peep finishes a work shift and returns home, they consume available food and drink to replenish Happiness and clear Exhaustion (restore Energy). Higher-tier culinary recipes multiply restoration per item consumed:
| Food / Drink Item | Source Building | Input Ingredients | Happiness Restored | Exhaustion Restored | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Potato | Potato Patch | Fertile/Grass Hex | +50 | +50 | Starter Raw |
| Vegetable | Vegetable Farm | Fertile Hex (Water + Dirt) | +50 | +50 | Starter Raw |
| Fish | Trawler | Coastal / Planetary Water | +60 | +60 | Outpost Raw |
| Meat | Pasture / Ranch | Planetary Pasture | +70 | +70 | Outpost Raw |
| Milk | Pasture | Planetary Pasture | +100 | +100 | Outpost Dairy |
| Egg | Pasture | Planetary Pasture | +100 | +100 | Outpost Protein |
| Fruit | Fruit Plantation | Within 4 hexes of Watered Forest | +100 | +100 | Mid-Game Crop |
| Berry | Berry Farm | Planetary / Fertile Biome | +100 | +100 | Mid-Game Crop |
| Juice | Drink Maker | Fruit / Berry + Water | +110 | +110 | Processed Drink |
| Bread | Bakery | Wheat → Flour + Water | +120 | +120 | Processed Staple |
| Smoothie | Drink Maker | Fruit + Berry + Milk/Water | +160 | +160 | High-Tier Drink |
| Cooked Meal | Kitchen | Meat/Fish + Veg/Potato + Bread | +200 | +200 | Apex Culinary |
Notice the massive jump between Raw Potatoes (+50/+50) and Fruit (+100/+100) or Cooked Meals (+200/+200). Planting a Fruit Plantation within 4 tiles of a watered Forest (+20% yield adjacency bonus) immediately doubles the Happiness and Energy recovery of every meal without requiring any factory power! How to Prevent and End 3-Shift Strikes
When a Peep’s Happiness bottoms out, a red protest icon appears above their head and they enter a Strike.

What Happens During a Strike?
- The striking Peep refuses to work for 3 full shifts.
- They still occupy their bed in a Hut/House and continue eating food from storage.
- If strikers work at your Water Pump, Potato Patch, or Burner Generator, their absence can trigger a cascade strike across the entire colony!
4-Step Emergency Strike Recovery Protocol
- Reassign Remaining Peeps to Water & Food: Immediately pause non-essential buildings (Research Lab, Quarry, Landscaper) so healthy Peeps automatically fill empty slots at Water Pumps and Farms.
- Drop Potato Patches Beside Huts: Ensure every early Hut touches 2 Potato Patches for the instant +20% Happiness adjacency buff.
- Place Triangle Decorations: Wedge Decorations into the vertex hexes between every 3 Houses, or place a Memorial Statue in the center of your 6-House residential ring (see Building Adjacency Bonus Layouts).
- Research Biology Personal Needs: Unlocking social and biological comfort nodes in the Biology Research tab permanently raises baseline resilience.

What Causes Peep Sickness and How Do You Cure It?
If you see green biohazard or fatigue icons over your Peeps, your workforce is suffering from Sickness. Peeps become sick from two sources:
- Chronic Exhaustion (Low Energy): When Peeps walk too far or only eat raw Potatoes (+50 Exhaustion recovery), their net Energy drains faster than it refills.
- Environmental Pollution: Working inside or walking across uncleaned Medium / High / Very High Pollution hexes—or living downwind of an unbuffered Ore Smelter or Cement Factory—poisons Peeps directly.
How to Eliminate Sickness Permanently
- Build a Doctor’s Office: Place at least one Doctor’s Office within 16 tiles of every major housing hub so sick Peeps get treated within a single shift.
- Scrub Industrial Hexes: Place Cleaners around all 22 polluting building types before tiles degrade into Toxic Areas (see Pollution & Toxic Area Guide).
- Upgrade to Fruit & Bread: Switching from Potatoes (+50) to Fruit (+100) and Bread (+120) eliminates Low-Energy sickness overnight.
